Of the five million annual visitors to Grand Canyon National Park, only 10% get to experience the rugged solitude of the North Rim, which is more than 1,000 feet (305 meters) higher than the South Rim. Here the Canyon reveals its perfect balance of serenity and power, peace and intensity. At the North Rim one can see more of the Grand Canyon’s diversity and appreciate the subtleties of one of the most studied geologic landscapes in the world.

Worthy of its rank as one of the seven natural wonders of the world, the Grand Canyon overwhelms the senses and captivates the imagination with its spectacular combination of incredible scale, dramatic views, awe-inspiring rock formations, and untamed beauty. Over a mile deep (1.6 Km) at its deepest point, 18 miles (29 Km) across at its widest, and 277 river miles (446 Km) long, the Grand Canyon is unmatched in majesty and magnificence. Not only is the Grand Canyon a crowning gem in America’s national park system, but also as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Canyon is considered to be of outstanding significance to the common heritage of the entire human race.

Celebrated for its extraordinary natural beauty, the Grand Canyon is often deemed to be one of the world’s most visually commanding landscapes, an immensely majestic gorge with temple-like bluffs; plummeting depths; fiery chestnut cliffs, towering plateaus; and vibrant, labyrinthine topography dappled with deserts, plains, forests, mesas, lava flows, cinder cones, streams, waterfalls, and one of America’s premier whitewater rivers.

The drive to the canyon across the Kaibab Plateau and conifer forest is a special treat of meadows, Fir and Aspen trees.  A view of the Colorado river, a natural arch, and other special overlooks and views are not so crowded with tourists as on the south rim.  A meal in the dinning room at any time of day gives you a view of the Grand Canyon no matter where you sit. I once sat in the dining room watching an especially bright rainbow circle over and descend right into the canyon, curving its way past the 180 degree mark one usually sees when it touches the ground.  If you are fortunate enough to spend the night here, most of the cabins are within walking distance of the rim, allowing for a convenient view of both the sunrise and sunset.   A stay in the cabins must usually be planned some months in advance.
